I have 3016 Pro now and wonder if Geoglyph 2 was updated to this version as well. I will need a lot of terrains for a personal project in Fall 2017 and wonder about the future of Geoglyph 2, as now Tor starts to come up and I don't want to invest into another dead software.

My primary application is Cinema 4D with Vray and the heightfield worked quite well together with splatter maps for materials and plants and color maps as well. Nevertheless Geoglyph 2 seems to be able to do much more and in a smoother and easier way.

Geoglyph is still under active development, not dead so far. New export formats coming with the next update, including EXR. 3016 is supported too, as far as I know. I don't have the latest build, so I can't check. I'll get back to you on that.

Tiled terrains never truly match up with single file terrain heightmap. The reason for this is that erosion does not take into account the height data in adjacent tiles, and blending is done as a post process. The terrain you wanted to be built should have been checked with tiled builds in earlier stages. One thing you can do is build high resolution single tile terrain, then in a new file, import it and cut up into tiles. Max you can go is 16k though, for one file. Or you can adjust your contour map according to the new tiled terrain (if that is even an option).

@Naima: Yes, it is an independent terrain design tool. Although it would take a few versions before it's as mature as world machine. So I think geoglyph development may continue for a while, as I read somewhere that TOR will have plugin integration with geoglyph. It has some geoglyph features implemented in house for sure, so maybe they will replace geoglyph soon. We are still waiting for more info. You can apply for the public beta starting soon here:

I am getting confused, What is TOR Platform now?

I read its from same authors of quadspinner? I mean whats going on ? World machine , TOR Platform , Geoglyph are they the same development team and are making different competiting softwares?


World machine is developed and maintained by "World Machine Software LLC" (Stephen Schmitt). Geoglyph is a plugin for world machine developed and maintained by "Quadspinner", a separate company. Now "Quadspinner" is working on their own standalone solution for terrain design, known as "TOR platform" at the moment. It's still under heavy development and not much information has been revealed.

Geoglyph 2 at it's current state is compatible with all versions up till 3011, and version 3015. 3014 doesn't have a PDK I think.

For now, geoglyph 2 works with wm dev 3011 and earlier. Next update to will add compatibility with latest release of wm.

World machine version?

I export all my terrains as meshes with UV coordinates. Haven't faced a problem yet. I'm on wm pro 3011. I don't have zbrush to test it though. Works in Blender, maya, and vue alright.

Yes, support is unresponsive. What is the problem that you reported?

@JakBB: I also recently found out that world machine does not use pagefile.sys to swap. It swaps directly to the temp folder set in wm preferences. Didn't know this earlier.

World machine pages a lot of data to disk when doing heavy tiled builds. Make sure you have space on your OS drive, or shift your "temp" folder to a more empty drive in your world machine preferences. If program crashes mid build, then these files do not get deleted, in which case you have to clear them manually.

By default, the temp folder where swap files are located is "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\World Machine 2.2 Professional\temp"

I'm guessing the second combiner is set to "subtract". Move the slider all the way to the right for subtract and you'll get expected result.

I am a former member of the Facebook group. I say former because WFab deleted me because I questioned his Gestapo like ruling of the group. I guess having an opinion in a group setting is considered "trouble making" to this guy. That said I also think it should be an open viewing group like many other membersy in the group and here  ...apparently.  It's an extremely unproductive platform set up the way it is I agree. Lots of great information by some of World Machine's best users in there. IMO essential for any level user of straight WM or WM W/GeoGlyph, It's the only place that has active experienced members experimenting and posting results...Pretty active as well. Too bad for the effected companies that one person intentionally limits it's audience. Look at this forum? It's dead

To everyone else, this guy is the only member ever removed from the group. Simple reason was, his habit of creating drama and random hostility over some petty problem. Like here itself. He created his 5th post in this forum, to create drama, and then he says it's dead. I rather didn't want to remove him, but like here, I realized he isn't capable of a civil conversation without drama, at least where I'm concerned.

As far as "gestapo like rules" go, his is an isolated case. I never removed anyone besides him. And even Danny here was warned, twice. Like I said, while it's not an official group, it's still an active community. There are also other open groups like the few DannyG here manages, you can join those too. They may not be world machine specific, but landscape design community is quite a friendly one.

@JakBB: I do not let in fake accounts, disposable accounts (active but with a fake handle as a name), business accounts (accounts used for marketing and other specific uses), and empty accounts (I ask for some info personally before I let them in). Right now, 99 % of people in there are using their personal IDs, and all are verified wm users. There is absolutely no spam and unrelated content in there because of these policies.

@sfriedberg: If you don't like facebook platform, you will probably gain nothing from it either. This forum is the only official communication platform for world machine, so you are not missing a lot.

The main reason slack group failed was because not one of it's members was comfortable with the platform. It's uninspiring to communicate using tools of that kind, unless it's directed towards a specific purpose (like beta testing group, bug reporting system etc). The purpose of the facebook group is to provide a platform for facebook addicts like myself, to communicate about world machine using familiar systems. If you're not interested in joining facebook, or joining the group itself, you don't fit that bill. It's not a gallery, or a content stealing platform, there are just too many of those. You want to see content, you commit to the group spirit. At least give up your valid identity. That's the point of a closed group.

The facebook group is not an official group. We are not associated with World machine software LLC in any way. This forum is the only official mode of communication about world machine.

That being said, you can join the group if you want to see the content being posted there. It's indeed more active than this forum. I'm the admin and it's my choice to keep it closed. I was thinking about creating another open group, but that idea was killed before it began.

If you want to see content being posted or post something yourself, please join the facebook group. Do read the group description first.

That image you linked is not a heightmap. It's an rgb colormap.
