3.0.dev1 Released
« on: November 14, 2013, 09:01:33 PM »
This is a major release, the first in the official line of development releases leading to World Machine 3.

Infrastructure Improvements

* Massive framework changes to support Localspace packets
* New file format improves forward/backward compatibility of all 3.x versions
* Set-preserving rescaling operator (selects value only from input values while being smoother than nearest neighbor)

Group Enhancements

* Group-based overrides for resolution and spatial type
* Hierarchical group membership (including group override processing)
* Groups can now be easily converted to macros
* You can choose to build or export only group members

UI Enhancements

* Can select any output port for default output
* Re-organize macro parameters
* Right-click context menus are now everywhere in the Device View
* WM now gives more feedback on why a device is not building (wrong inputs/etc)
* WM now explains more when a device is flagged with a (!) symbol
* The device network now can show you the build times and memory consumption for each device from the last build
* Can now set device name in properties window
* Improved all device descriptions

New Devices & Improvements

* Mimic Device
* Chooser gains a "Height-Matching" mode, which allows you to seamlessly match to the surrounding terrain on an insertion.
* Blur device now scales much better, and can be thousands of times faster with larger blur radius sizes. It also supports an extended range of radii
* Erosion results are improved: varying resolutions no longer produce dramatically different results with Geological Time Enhancement
* Object-placing (singular or tiled) device
* Object-scattering device (with support for jittered-grid fractal instances)
* Mesh output now supports Y-up or Z-up export
* Combiner gets new modes, including new "Extract Differences" function
* Select Convexity gains new abilities and is now stabilized better against scale changes

Take note of the currently known issues as mentioned in a seperate thread.

3.0.dev1 Release
« Reply #3 on: August 14, 2014, 05:33:33 PM »
The upcoming dev release will be this coming monday!

I've also re-labelled the version to 3.0.dev1 to better reflect the intention of the dev channel -- essentially all of the changes are those made on the way to WM 3.

There's a number of reasons for the long delay between essential code completeness and release; the big news is that the way that major version releases are handled is changing. In other words, instead of every few years producing a major new release (WM3, WM4, ...) and charging upgrades to that version, there will be a continuous release of semi-annual to quarterly features. Details will be forthcoming soon; I am out of town this weekend but will be sending out a newsletter with more information on my return.

Com'on Remnant, it`s Monday.
People are getting nervous!  :lol: :lol: :lol:

On a more serious note, this is going to be a great release.
And somehow, I have a feeling the upgrade to 3.0 it`s going to be as a subscription.
I`m really curious about that.
Am I wrong?

Hi,

Wrapping things up; the first dev release of 3 should be available pretty soon I hope.

The most recent blog post talks about the development model we're shifting to:

http://www.world-machine.com/blog/?p=357

Essentially, its a hybrid of traditional and subscription, one that I think is the best of both worlds. I'll be writing more about this when I send out a newsletter about the release.

3.0 dev 1 is a very important release both for what it brings to the table and also because it starts the evolution process for the rest of the development releases. I'm excited to get people started using and breaking all of the new features :)

Released!

There are a small number of example worlds included with this release demonstrating how to use some of the new features.

Let me know if there are any problems with the release, including with the upgrade purchase mechanism.

I'm also strongly considering using a wiki to write all the new documentation on features and devices -- if so it will make an appearance soon.

The follow up dev-2 release should occur much more quickly than dev-1 -- likely before Christmas, containing all kinds of other devices and things that didn't quite make it into dev-1. As always, your feedback and suggestions are highly appreciated and encouraged.

Where can I grab the 3.0dev1?

You need to make the payment for the 1 year maintenance and it`ll be available for download in your regular download page.

@Remnant:
I`m glad I was wrong regarding the subscription. I totally dislike the subscription model. Especially the very rigid mandatory money grabber ones.
Your "Annual Maintenance" approach is a very well thought model. As a customer I`m more than happy to pay this way for your awesome piece of software. It`ll make future safer, for me as a customer and for you as a developer.

One question though: lets say next year August 15, when my recently payed maintenance will expire, a new WM4.0dev1 will be available for me to download. The final release for WM4.0 will come out in October and I didn`t renew my subscription. Will I have the right to get the final WM4.0? Or I will get the final release for WM4.0 only after I payed for my second 2015-16 maintenance? I think I know the answer, but I thought it doesn`t hurt to ask.

And thanks for this great release!

Takulas:

I agree! At the same time, I've seen the value of a subscription-type model as most of my dev tools have switched to it. I think an 'Annual Maintenance' model is a good sweet spot.

Regarding final vs dev releases:

No distinction is made between a final release (dropped to the release channel) and a dev release. So if your maintenance expired right before final release, you would be required to upgrade to download the release version. Of course, you would then receive additional upgrades over the course of the following year as well...
