Geology and Terrain / Working from and conserving a coastline?

I've been working on building an eroded height map that has a very specific coastline. The problem I've been running into is that when I run it through the filters the coastline is changed and is no longer recognizable or if I mask the filter then I get strange anomalies that don't look natural at the coast line. Any suggestions on how to start with a specific coastline and get realistic results?


Ah ha! Didn't notice the link before. Trying to find the 2005 version through Microsoft is a pain.

This are alwul roads, but the first step, maybe.

There is actually a tutorial in one of the directories (forget which one) that you can load that shows you how to make very good roads. You can change the hight of each node to match the terrain.

This is pretty general advice, but I don't seem to get much results from asking on other message boards. Going to try my luck here.

I'm seeking advice on how best to combine height fields and 3d models into a single seamless image. Do you combine them in a single program for a single render, or render them separately and use photo editing?

If using photo editing, how do you work in linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, depth of field to match the two. How do you create the mask to place the objects into the image?

Whats the best method for including realistic flora?

If you have links to tutorials that would be awesome.

The PDK should be available very shortly after the release of WM2.

I haven't attempted to use it with VC 2008 yet myself, so I can't comment on that until I try it!

How do I create a large continent that has it all - mountains, plains, lakes, etc. etc..?

It takes some work to get what you want but you can start with is a Perlin Noise. Set the size towards continent. Add Coastal Erosion and set it to the global sea level. You can add Curves filter and tweak it till you get what you like. You can add masks to each of these devices to control where and to what degree these filters are applied.

The more playing around you do with it, the more you get the hang of it and can produce exactly what you are shooting for. There are also flow maps generated with the Erosion filter which may help you find where rivers would be.

I'm sure there will be some really cool and useful macros that will be shared here pretty soon to. If you don't see one, you can request.

Sounds like your using a toroidal topology which is pretty much top meets bottom, and left meets right.

I played around with FT. Cool little program. Other than the weather mapping, world machine should be able to manage everything it does and more.

As soon as I get back into the plugin development I plan on trying to do something along the lines of simulating plate tectonics with rifts and mountains and such. Where you could have mountain ranges close to subduction zones etc...

I found only one application that can generate a whole planet but i don't really like the way it generates (and there is absolutely no possibility like erosions, etc). One great feature of it is that it can calculate climate and generate river flow (and export that as a separate layer that makes coding in the game easier).

What program is this? I wouldn't mind checking it out. Maybe you can import heightfields or meshes.

Don't use Blender either, but do use Lightwave.  I suspect the question involves importing a WM2 mesh.

I ran it at both 4 and 8 active threads on my quad and didn't see much change in render times. Is there any reason to run 2 threads per core? And is there anything else that can be tweaked to improve performance?

I don't seem to have a problem manipulating the existing line. But every so often when I create one as soon as I right click to finalize it, it crashes. It happens about every 3rd time on average.

I'll update my drivers when I get back from vacation next monday.

Splitter has been deprecated I believe since any number of devices can now grab an output from a single device. I see curves in my build WM2 pro 64. Don't see simple transform, however would be nice to have that one.

You could use a Layout Generator and the line tool.
