Title: What have YOU produced with World Machine? Call for submissions!
Post by: Remnant on June 20, 2008, 03:56:30 AM
Hey everyone,

we're approaching release time again! I'm very exciting about all of the new functionality and features available in World Machine 2, and I think all of you will be as well. :)

The new website is going to go live shortly for WM 2; and what I really want to go with it are some new example results. I'd love to see not just final renders, but also your results of using World Machine terrains in your game or mod.

Email me at [email protected] with your submissions!

I do have a few screenies lying around of a couple of projects:

1) AnduinVale- farmland amd rivers I seem to remember. Pretty cool- just never got around to completing it.

2) Misty Mountains - humungous layouts and cool landscapes based on the European Alps.

I played around a bit today when i recieved my copy of WM 2.0 Pro (loving it already!) what a great release. Here's two examples i made tonight.. the landscape is something i quickly made in WM2 then generated the greyscale 16bit map and exported it as a tiff, and i also generated the colormap, both maps at 2048x2048 resolution. After that was done i loaded them into Maxwell Studio where i created a simple shader to map on a planar mesh, ran a couple of testrenders of it to check the height and level of detail in the displacement, when all looked fine i let it cook for around 10 hours while i were out having fun. Ofcourse these were both rendered with Maxwell Render 1.7 :)

Click on the thumbnail links below to view these at full resolution.

It's just a WM2 render of my first practice project, but I thought it came out pretty good.

Full sized versions...

VorpalBlade: Those look real nice, i like the detail in them :) post some more now

Here's two more of mine generated today, i call them alien landscapes because they kinda look like alien landscapes.. no colormaps generated yet, but once i figure out how to make them i'll create them hehe

VorpalBlade: Thanks :) bonetissue, yes ofcourse. I didn't think of that

One more.. this is a WM2 landscape brought into TG2 techdemo version and draped with a snowcover, a sun and a atmospheric setting and rendered. Although this is a relative small landscape in size when rendered like this is looks quite massive :) i like that.

WM2 and TG2 seem made for each other.  I wish I knew what I was doing with WM2 (let alone TG2) - these products amaze me!!

Nice stuff!!. That alien skin thing looks great.

Stephen, it would be awesome to have some sort of communal royaltyfree area for Scenes, Macros, heightmaps etc.

often I see an image and think..hmm...what settings did they use?

What I am interested in seeing is how close people can get their camera to the ground and still see nice interesting detailing.

I did these during beta testing. This is part of our ongoing work at the Middle Earth DEM Project:
This series shows the sheer scale possible within WM id the terrains are exported as tiled tilesets.
The layouts were created by extracting the ridge networks from a dem of the European Alps.
The terrain is built to have correct hydrology (water flow) across it's surface- so if you drop water on the mountains, the water will eventually flow down to the sea along the river courses on the map.

I tested Luxology Modo's displacement and then i used one of my WM2 landscapes for that test, here's my result :) btw, i displaced a simple 24x24 subdivided plane and lit the resulting scene with Modo's physical sky. The animation is 200 frames long and it rendered pretty fast at around 30-60 seconds per frame (average speed) and the polycount per frame was around 3 to 5,5 million.

Some exampleimages below showcasing when i tried to push Modo's displacement to it's limits for my system which seems to be around 30 million polys. :)

Does that game use WM for it's terrain?  Did you help work on that game?  A bit more info on why you posted that link would be nice.  :?
Title: Re: What have YOU produced with World Machine? Call for submissions!

worldmachine was used in production.  Maps were pre-rendered based on a randomization code that would export .bmp that I would use as file inputs.  Those would lay the groundwork telling my script where ocean, coast, hills and mountains were.  Using spliters, I would split off the coast, mountains etc., run them through their own process, combine them at the end of the script, and export a heightmap.  I also used the same script to also export an rgb mask using select height + slope, those would tell the game where to place the textures, like mountains and snow.

ok here is something made for the hl2 engine..I am yet to really put some color in it...I took an raw file capture using a plugin for nasa World Wind..then put it though some devices in wm2.  Its about 32500 square map with 600 x 600 displacments in game.  The whole terrain is textured with a 2048 square image from wm2 including a normal map and has a detail tiling texture under it..not finished but the color version should be done by the end of today..oh and the region is Ceuta

Moving the ME-DEM project on. This combines the use of World Machine and Global Mapper. This is fully georeferenced terrain. We roundtrip betwee nthe two apps. Progressively building up areas of detail. The core data set resides in GM. All of the terrain modelling is done in WM. There is no erosion applied as yet.

The hydrography in this model is intended to work, ie drop some physics sim water on it and the rivers will flow in the way prescribed from the topo map I worked from. this is a tiny section (approx 400 km) of the full terrain. Full extents = 4000 km across.

I made a couple Terragen2 scenes using WM2 terrains here:

    http://www.jafgraph.us/3D_Graphics_Pages/Terragen/tg2_5.htm
    http://www.jafgraph.us/3D_Graphics_Pages/Terragen/tg2_6.htm

I modeled everything in Lightwave 9.6.  I was really testing TG2 -- to see how much I could throw at it (objects) and have quite a few additions to add in a few days.

Hi guys, this is my first post here. I finally scraped together enough money to buy WM2 after loving and using the basic version so much.
I make maps for an open source strategy engine Spring (http://springrts.com).
Heres some of the stuff (Keep in mind that its not utilizing the full potiential of WM because of gameplay considerations, and my old limit of 513 is finally gone!):

I made this terrain using World Machine 2.
The render is made with Terragen 2 and is a crop from a WIP using the same terrain.

Some more pics from the Middle Earth DEM Project, here's some shots in the real-time planetary renderer Outerra (currently in early beta, pics posted with kind permission of the developers).

The terrain was modelled in World Machine, Leveller and Photoshop. Terrain scaled, eroded, built, tiled in World Machine.

I used the Carpathians as the basis for Mordor. The problem with that was that they are not young mountains like say the Himalayas with all of those sharp glaciated ridges, so I had to apply ridge sharpening in World Machine using the excellent Sharpening macro. The Photoshop processing removed some of the high frequency detail from the terrain so I replaced that procedurally in World Machine with the Advanced Perlin device while preserving the integrity of the valleys with convexity and height masks.

A quick test of tilted strata.
I used a terrace device and into that I put a gradient device. The gradient goes into both the main input and the terrace modulation. Setting the gradient up takes a bit of fiddling but the results are not bad. You can get some wacky effects if you twiddle with the gradient and number of terraces. You can place the gradient too via the World Placement in the device. You can control the exact placement of the strata by using a layout as a mask.

Nothing crazy here, just some terrain with a modified version of Color Overlay macro to take all of the Erosion generated maps as parameters.

Sorry about the lowrez, but I took this straight out of the viewport and added some quick clouds and sunrays in photoshop. :P

Trying to get an "Arizona look".  I haven't gotten to the vegetation yet, so I attempted to add some ground fog.

Six of the terrains are from WM2 with a Terragen 2 generated backdrop.  Rendered in TG2 with no post work.

The Middle-Earth DEM Project has released a free interactive Middle-Earth demo.

World Machine is one of the core apps we used to make the terrain in the demo. I've been using World Machine for a number of years now. I couldn't do any work on this project without it frankly. All of the terrain and mask layers were composited in World Machine. Some erosion was added. Layouts were used to control various things such as terracing, erosion, terrain height and form, and glacial valleys. The tiling features were used extensively for i/o.

What you see in the video is what you get in the free demo. :)

Hello, I’m a lead technical artist at UNIGINE Corp. We used World Machine when developing Valley Benchmark, namely for generation of:

        - terrain height map,
        - terrain diffuse map,
        - masks for terrain detail materials,
        - masks for distribution of objects on the terrain (rocks, trees, crags, etc.)

Screenshots and information about the project: http://www.unigine.com/products/valley/

Full HD video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZMVz3oUCagw

We'll publish the detailed article about the process of creating Valley Benchmark with in-work screenshots and WM files a bit later.

Here's a project I've been working on in my free time. It's 100% procedural, I didn't use any layout tools, and it's straight out of WM.

Image of my graph (I don't know why, I like to see these things)...

Those are mostly macros, and the blue lines are each a set of 3 separate maps. For example, one pack contains Average Sun Light, Precipitation Potential, and Wind.

In the past I had it generating quality terrain zooming all the way down close to the size of a large Battlefield map. I've got some old examples of terrain up close here. (http://procedurl.tumblr.com/) I have more recently focused on continental scale generation and so naturally it looks like complete crap up close now. Unfortunately work has stalled because render times have become too bothersome for quick iteration, a new PC will do me good.

My end goal (long way away) is to generate an entire MMO sized world in a game engine (I'll be eyeing UNIGINE for sure!). I've got distribution maps for pretty much everything from bedrock to soil, to plant and tree life, weather conditions, and also farm land and cities. There's even a distinction between farm towns and port towns. I think I could actually generate distribution maps for just about everything I need to make a "living" MMO scale world. Granted it would probably be a dull world for a game, but also great base to start from.

I haven't used WM in a while but, beside the detail being gorgeous, something picked my interest, how do you manage to have "régions" like a southern desert and northern mountains without using any form of layout at all? I can see not using layout for the terrain itself but don't you even use a layout curve or something to show how "hot" the terrain should be generated?

Also i'm going to have a pretty beefy server soon again, let me know if you'd be interested in having a very high resolution render done for free (if you're using a version of WM i have access to). Depending on how hungry your graph is i could go pretty high (i've done decently complex graphs at 128 000 X 128 000).

Also i'm going to have a pretty beefy server soon again, let me know if you'd be interested in having a very high resolution render done for free (if you're using a version of WM i have access to). Depending on how hungry your graph is i could go pretty high (i've done decently complex graphs at 128 000 X 128 000).

Hi Ronan, what are the specs of your server? I wonder if it has 1tb of RAM or something else.

Still haven't bought the large server i'll need down the road for my project so currently using these : https://www.ovh.com/fr/serveurs_dedies/enterprise/ (the mg 256), so 256gig of ram & 40 threads

Down the road will buy a 2TB 80core+ server.

Impressive. But this is not proper way to go. Proper way is redesign of application to be not so memory hungry and GPU support. There are already World generating tools with GPU support, for example height map generation is 100x faster.

GPGPU is not the holy grail of everything, it's not like you can stick 2TB of ram on a video card quite yet and i'm using big servers to generate very large (non tiled) areas as a lot of filters break down in quality on tiled (need neighbooring information they can't get if it's rendering elsewhere).

And WM is not "memory hungry", it's pretty good at what it does i'd say and the conserve memory that dumps intermediate results is a nice plus.

World-creator (former GEO control). Almost everything is realtime.
