General Discussion / Animatable Landscape Slice

Hi,

I am trying to create an animatable slice through an 8km x 8km terrain. I want to be able to using a slider move a 1km x 8km mask across an 8km x 8km terrain.

I have tried using the instance placer, but I am struggling to generate and scale a mask procedurally, which I would use as a multiplier for the terrain output. Any ideas?

Hi,

I have a build farm which distributes tiled jobs to machines on a network using the automation scripting. I have some questions:

1. Is there some way to run world machine completely silently, no pop up windows etc
2. On certain pc's the process running world machine, will crash the process that spawned it after a few jobs, consistently. I am using the worldmachineCMD.exe, this is with DEV 3.0 and running windows 10. Are there any other commandline options I can enabled to get some debug info from WM? ntly using the -log option.

Any insight would be appreciated

Feature Requests / File input/output features

Hi,

Love the 3.0 dev1 release firstly  :D So file input and output some features that would help general workflows:

Tiled file input does not allow relative paths, this is a blocker on some dataset builds on the farm.
The tiled file input does not cater for files that contain an alpha channel, while file output will allow alpha channels to be saved.
The file input and output would benefit from a way to specify a custom file extension.
We currently use. r16 in world machine and external DCC, but the file extensions are different. In DCC the file is simply a .raw file extensions, but still a .r16 internally
A way to load a custom file extension and specify its file type would be very useful and cut out a whole step of renaming data when moving data between DCC to world machine and then back to DCC.
What are the chances of releasing a complete input/ output node sample in the PDK this would allow some community development for you? Support of exotic file formats etc.
Being able to load and save to memory mapped files opens a whole new dynamic to hot-linking into world machine and tighter pipeline.

On a related tangent, is there any long term plan to allow .Net languages access to world machine via PDK wrapper?

Has anyone looked at writing a node using the WM SDK, to allow the use of memory mapped files via world machine, for loading and saving etc?

Hi Stephen,

How does the 0.0 - 1.0 range in the slope selector device relate to real world degrees? I thought at first it was sin values but that seems incorrect past 45 degrees?

Hi all,

I am trying to build a difference height map based on the same specification the detail function in the combiner uses.
For example I want to take the differences between two heights maps A and B then generate a height map of the results where result < 0.5 when B is lower than A and result > 0.5 when B is higher than A.

Has anybody been able to achieve this. I spent some time with combiner networks trying to filter out the +/- differences and place them around a 0.5 origin, I did not find a suitable solution.

Any ideas on the best combination of logical maths operation to perform to achieve this, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stephen,

I have been working with automation recently so I have been using the automation scalar nodes to build large macro's. These macro's work fine till they are saved to the macro library at which point they loose the variable naming?

The macro I noticed this on has 40 automation scalars. So having to go and rename the variables each time I want to use this macro in a tmd scene is not practical and kind of defeats the point of the macro concept.

I am having to use "Import Devices" to load this macro into scenes that I want to use it on. Can you patch this issue? The version I am using is 2.3.5.1 Pro

Macros and Plugins / Converting Integer to Scalar

Hi,

Is it possible convert from an integer value to a scalar value to drive a device. This is to make a macro where input units would be in degrees for slope selection, to make it more real world friendly as opposed to using values from 0.0 to 1.0 etc?

Hi,

I have noticed this behavior when using tiled builds and the tile numbering.

If I have a 4 x 4k m world build and I want to render the center 2 x 2km in a tiled build the tile numbering at zero. Is there a way for the extents to start at the index of the complete world as opposed to the current extents setting. I know I can set the start numbering for the tiles in the tile build dialogue, can I specify this start value in an automation script. The documentation does not mention I can specify these values via automation.

I am asking this because I am trying to build an automated set-up that can tile build specific tiles on request and differing size dimensions of tiled builds. I want these tiled builds to respect the total size world tile numbering, I do not want to create a lot of rendering extents inside a tmd file as this will make the file less portable for iterating with etc.

I suppose being able to specific a master extent and then a sub extent that can understand its position in the full world would solve this issue also.
