Any new ones?

Bought all your tutorials already in summer. Great tutorials by the way!
Just a question. Do we talk about physical or virtual cores? A Core i7 has 4 physical, but 8 virtual cores.
I work on a dual Xeon with 6 physical cores, each 32 GB RAM and think about upgrading as well. Should be a lot faster with the Pro edition.
Well, the standard edition only uses to cores or even virtual cores. I would expect that the speed would double.

The basic shape looks good. Maybe you should add some noise and erosion for details.

Another vote for that from my side. I'm using Cinema 4D and Vue as well.
This would be a real nice feature.

As a workaround I think about using a hires height map (b&w) and then making a lowres height map in photoshop. This can be used as base for the obj. Then you would have to make a difference map in photoshop to get the displacement map. When I have more time, I'll try to refine this idea.
No problem. I just wonder, why it does not work with the standard version.  :?

Very nice work. You definitely have to share your progress on that... :D

too bad, it only works with WM Pro version....

So it does not work with the Standard version? Good to know. I almost missed that.

Well, if you've got the extra cash to spend, the GeoGlyph macros from QuadSpinner have a couple for creating more natural looking terracing. I'm currently using the community build, which is free, but limited to 1025 resolution. I would definitely suggest it, if you're having issues with terraces (there's a lot of other neat stuff in it as well).

Thanks, just downloaded the free version. I also like the rest of the macros. I may at least buy the Indie version.

Thanks, that sounds good! I'll try it.

Nice work so far! I see a bit of polygons visible on the bottom left. That should be fixed by smoothing normals. I don't know how it's done in c4d or vray though. Also, terraces are a bit too obvious, try masking those with a noise or fractal.

Thanks! This part of the terrain is very close to the camera and the visibility of the polygons may also be related to the resolution of the bitmap texture. I'll have to investigate this in detail. I plan to use the bitmap as mask in further images and use a native material with a much higher resultion.

The terraces are obvious and I have to change that. I would also love to see a feature where you can horizontally tilt the terraces. This might be intersteing for canyons as well.

Hi all,

I made my first attempt to get a terrain from world machine to Cinema 4D and render it with Vray. I really like the result.
The terrain is a slightly modified one from Iri Shinsoj. I used a heightmap, a colormap and a normal map.

The 4097x4097 heightmap was used for displacement and a simple diffuse (colormap) and normal channel was added. You have to flip the X-Axis for the normal map to get a correct one for Vray.

Overall I did add a bit specularity were the snow is.

The scene was lit with an HDRI. Seems I have a workflow now that i can refine further.

I really like the terraces, but sometimes they are a bit too regular. I'd like to be able to give them a horizontal tilt and/or vary the strength of the terrace over the terrain to break them up a bit and make them more irregular.

Just a suggestion.
Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your reply. In case of the layout device some inputs correspond to the values that can be set inside (see first post). Others are not obvious for me.
I really like world machine and it's flexibility and I most probably will end up writing macros as well. So some of the entries might be useful.

I also started a detailed documentation that I'd like to share here when it reaches a certain quality level.

Thanks for providing this software

best regards
In general, I wonder if there is any information regarding these inputs on top of the devices available. Also for other devices.
I didn't find any information so far, but I wonder, how the control inputs of the layout device work.

I know I need a number, so I drive the input with a parameter device.

- I have no idea what Strength Method is for.
- Quality takes numbers from 0 to 3 and refers to Precision vs Speed settings
- Breakup Enable is a toggle. 0 is off, 1 is on.
- I didn't find the reference to Shape Breakup. Every time I set a value there, the fractal breakup changes to zero.
- The same happens with Shape Frequency. Everytime I set a value, the breakup scale changes to zero as well.
- Shape Roughness corresponds with the roughness value (1 to 6)
- I have no idea what Background Value is for.

Is there a documentation about that somewhere? Can someone enlighten me?

If you go to the view drop-down there is an option to Open Additional Window. You can use this on your second monitor.

This menu item is greyed out. How do I get it to work? Thanks.

As far as I understood, this is a feature of the Pro version.
I need all kinds of realistic terrains for use in 3D applications like Cinema 4D, Vue, Maya,...

Hills with Alpine mountains in the background, Nordic fjords, desert mountains, canyons, tropical islands, river valleys, coast lines,...
World Machine provides a huge number of parameters and someone must have had an idea, what can be done with them. Some are obvious, but some are not.

So I'd love to see project based tutorials and what can kind of distribution/mask maps can be generated for thrid party software.

As I said, I'm on the beginning and already studied the geekatplay tutorials. Maybe you can go beyond that.
Sound interesting, but your links are totally wrong in this post. At least I made it via Youtube. You should correct them.  8)

I'm interested to use it with Cinema 4D and Surfacespread or Carbon Scatter. I got WorldMachine last week and also the newest tutorial from GeekAtPlay.
I'd love to get more detail, what your approach is to make great terrains. I really consider buying this course.  :D

I'd love to see not only explaining parameters, but showing different strategies for creating different kind of terrains. It's nice to have a lot of levers with names, but I really like to know, for what end results they can be used.
