Say for example building a map in the popular game engines such as cryengine sdk's or unrealeditor...

How would a "splatmap" come into play?

My basic understanding is that splatmaps are pre-rendered heightmaps/textures so that you have multiple quality sources to combine in photoshop or in the layout editor of WM to add more customization to the terrain outputs. Is this wrong?

What is the ideal file outputs to create splatmaps? heightmap? normal map? bitmap?

How does the alpha channel come in to play?

Any good links or tutorials are much appreciated.
