On the geoglyph Facebook page, the developer says that he's contact with the wm dev, and that updates are still happening. He didn't give much more detail than that, though.

Where did he say that and did he specifically say he was *currently* in touch, or had been *in the past*?

I suppose I remembered what the comment said incorrectly. Here is the full text of the comment, dated September 18 of this year, which seems to imply that they may not currently be in contact with the dev, but might still be privy to information that we are not:

"Stephen has indeed been very quiet, but as we understand the software is still under development. We're looking forward to the next 3.0 build. In the meantime, we'll pass on the message that users are eager to get an update from him."

Doesn't matter if Dax is in contact with him or not. The developer does login to the website from time to time and that's enough reason to assume he's been reading everyone's posts since last year and keeping quite on purpose.

He could remove the fake accounts with the ads for the mills and crusher. Saying something here would also give some the confidence (at least me) to upgrade or get a new license.

I'm not afraid about that. For a decent upgrade price tag, I would pay and also change to the professional version.

If you're changing from Basic to Pro with purchasing a WM3 license cool. Sweet. But going from WM2 pro to WM3 pro is basically purchasing an update that was supposed to happen to WM2 Pro for free.

Nice, but...
- Exporting the terrains seems to be a superior function, not available in the cheap versions.
- I wonder, which masks are provided by Vue. WorldMachine supports a lot of different masks that can be used for distribution of items or materials.

I've been a Vue user for quite a while, but using Vue stuff outside of Vue was always a mess. If you are not going to use Vue as your main application, you may be stuck with not so perfect exports or more expensive versions...

Yes I agree. Expensive and messy.

So what's up with WM development?
2.3 didn't get the promised upgrade instead we were asked to pay for 3 ... not even a discount for 2.3 owners? What's on your roadmap? Are you still alive?

This is how the World (Machine) ends.
Not with a bang, but with a whimper...

 It really amazes me that a developer could apparently abandon his community in such a way. I have to believe there are larger issues that took over.

As it is, the software is still unique - filling a gap because it's so niche. There is a larger market than just entertainment for height map filtering. I hope someone picks up the WM market share and takes it to the next level.

Could people please list some alternatives with active communities?

Thanks all,
-Dave

I think World Creator is pretty much going to eclipse WM: http://www.world-creator.com/

Well, I don't often get a chance to quote T.S. Eliot in the forums... :)
