Should World Machine be used for smaller detail?

Hi everybody,

I've played around with World Machine a bit these past few weeks, and was able to make some mountains and erosion, et cetera. I notice that things I work with usually naturally end up on a larger scale, and have deduced that that's the primary function of World Machine: large terrains. Worlds. But, what if I wanted smaller details in sand, akin to.. maybe Star Wars Battlefront by EA. How is it done in that case? More programs such as world machine? Vigorous sculpting by hand? If anyone has any suggestions, they'd be appreciated.
