This seems like the perfect job for WM's erosion, however its 99% vertical so WM's gravity is kinda 90 degrees the wrong way. Anyone have any tips as to how I might achieve this?

I guess it's not enough just give some tips, nevertheless here's a tip for you: try to invert an eroded terrain.
I'll try and make a file the creates those structures for you. However, you'll still have to do quite some work in your application (TG2 or whatever) and do some displacement to get those overhangs.  But the rest should be able to be done with heightfields :)

That the best I managed to build today. Here is the file: http://nikita.tac-design.net/sonstiges/2.tmd
Your best bet will be to combine several terraisn built with this file and then put it into a terrain you like.

Thanks for the prompt response! That looks really cool - I'm going to play around with it when I get home and I'll post the results :)
