memory question....

Hi all–

WM was running out of memory trying to build complex and/or detailed landscapes (e.g. 4096 resolution) so I installed more RAM. I upgraded my computer’s RAM from 1 Gb to 3 Gb, but WM still runs out of memory at approximately the same place, specifically at 1090.6 Mb. This is whether memory conservation is on or off, and the build APPEARS to run out of memory in more or less the same place.

The POST shows the full 3 Gb of RAM and so does Windows sys info. When WM runs out of memory, sys info still shows 1.60 Gb of physical memory available (not to mention 2 Gb of virtual memory). So WM is clearly not making full use of the RAM available on the machine.

Is there a config setting I need to tweak or something?

Apologies in advance if this is a FAQ.

Hi Mike,

check out this question: http://forum.world-machine.com/index.php?topic=357.0

The problem is not exactly that WM is out of ram; rather, it is out of available address space in a contiguous block for a memory allocation (of which by default applications on windows can only can use 2GB of the 4GB addressable limit on a 32bit system).

A good explanation of the problem (for a different application) is here: http://www.ittvis.com/services/techtip.asp?ttid=3346

Thanks-- I have XP Pro so I’ll try this. It’s frustrating having to jump thru hoops like this to make the OS take advantage of physical resources!

BTW, thanks especially for the speedy reply!
