Preview Problem

I have a recurring issue with previews. The elevation disappears every few seconds, its not only the preview. Colorizers and other devices that relies on elevation also loose their elevation data. It is a very persistent problem in the way that it happens in every file that are a little bit complicated.

This is what it is supposed to look like:

but every few seconds it turns into this:

It is easy to fix, change a value in a device or click on the Force Output to be Displayed as Terrain, or even the button to Force the Output to be Displayed as Mask. Both of them fixes the problem for around 5 - 10 seconds and it comes back. It is very annoying to have to keep restoring the previews all the time to see what I’m working on properly.

This issue affects both the Layout View and 3D View, but not Explorer View for some reason.

This is the last of the major issues I have with WM4. Would love to have it fixed.

Hi Anna,

I’ve gotten a few scattered reports of this problem for a while but it’s extremely hard to replicate. If you have a setup that can consistently produce the issue it would be enormously helpful.

I strongly suspect there is still some subtle race condition within the paging system that is causing this issue - I fixed the primary issue quite a while ago but there are a bunch of edge cases. Try disabling the memory paging within Program Settings → Storage → Allow World Machine to page to disk.

Thank you for looking into this, and I think you are on to something with paging. The problem gets rarer after having worked on the same file in the same session. Now I’ve had the same file open and edited on and off for over 4 hours, and the issues is no longer present.

It seems to be when you open a complex file that needs paging, but once its been up ad running for a while and I’m working with shapes and tweaks here and there, no issues.

Attaching a zipped version of my file here:

Update!

When I change scene in the same file, the problems comes back again. We’ll see if they go away if I keep working in the same scene.

Update:

The issue disappears after a little while even after changing scenes, so I’m a happy camper now!

I believe this should be ironed out in 4065. If not, we can continue to follow up and track this down!
