Terragen 2 with objects...

Thought you all might be interested in seeing this news. The first Terragen 2 alpha image with objects has been shown… by me. Check it out over on Ashundar: http://www.ashundar.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=2146

oh dear!..

Trees are taking over Mt Saint Helens!..

I see a lot of doors opening up lots of possibilities… I’m starting to fear the future as I don’t feel ready for it :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the grass and bushes on the bottom left, though!..

Hehe, glad you noticed the grass/bushes. They’re pretty subtle. I am hoping to do an image featuring them more heavily soon. I will definitely do variations of this scene.

Impressive! I can’t wait until Terragen 2 will get released…

That’s HUGE!
Is the tree the same geometry eachtime or is there some mutation at work?

This type of stuff always spawns some questions in me… but they end up being questions about how TG2 will work… Anyway, they are:
Can the user specify an [x,y] position for the object? orientation? inclination and so on? Is it a mechanism similar to the noise texture in the normal TG, with some imagem mask? (height, slope, etc) SOPack might do wonders here!
specifying vertical/perpendicular placing, etc, etc… Oh well, most of this stuff is to ask in the TG forum :frowning:
But I would like to imagine how this could mingle with WM! the natural exporting of heightmaps, should still be usable.

You can certainly specify a position, orientation and size for an invidual object. You have control over that in the instancing system as well, and it’s variable, so you can define a range - let’s say you want size to range from 1 to 5 (multiples of the base object size). So this gives you some variety.

The distribution does work similar to surface textures in TG, where you can control it using altitude and slope constraints, as well as using a fractal or image-based mask. SOPack isn’t need anymore btw, all that kind of stuff is internal.

WM and TG2 will definitely be complementary IMO. WM still makes awesome heightfields and TG2 can still load them and make them look great. The terrain in this image is of course a heightfield.

The objects are varied somewhat for each instance, by size, rotation, and orientation if desired. Further variation should be possible in the shipping version of TG2.

Ok, I know it’s an overused word but this is awesome!
It’s hard to believe it’s Terragen. I’d better start improving rapidly with the current Tgen or I fear TG2 will leave me standing!
TG2 & WM1. What a combination!
Great stuff Oshyan and thanks for sharing. - Graeme.
