The distortion guide was used to provide a limited form of what the placement input does. When connected, it overrides the placement. You’re right, this is surprising behavior.
The current version of the advanced perlin device is now one of the eldest devices in World Machine and is due for a refresh. In particular, it predates the placement input as well as spatial parameters. The various guide inputs will be converted into spatial parameters as appropriate whenever the next version of that device is released.
