Announcing the launch of the "Terrain Summit" community

Today I’m pleased to at last be able to announce the launch of one of my many side projects. In cooperation with the Middle Earth DEM Project and the CG Arts organization, I have helped to create a website dedicated to discussion of the greater terrain modeling industry and craft. I would like to invite everyone here to participate in this newly launched community!

http://terrain.cg-arts.org/forum/

We will be discussing a broad range of subject matter, from procedural terrain modeling and rendering to georeferencing, global terrain generation and visualization issues, to networked application issues, and much more.

Rather than being a competitor for communities like this one, it is focused much more on broad theory and the future of terrain modeling and visualization in general. Applications like World Machine, Terragen, Geocontrol, Global Mapper, and the like will be discussed, but the goal is to identify and help solve the remaining major issues of the terrain industry, rather than to discuss techniques of specific applications or critique work created in any particular application.

I hope to see many of you there over the coming weeks. Stop by and see what we’re talking about, even if you don’t feel you have something to say. You never know, you may have the magic idea that revolutionizes terrain modeling as we know it!

Not to beat a dead horse(I hope it isn’t dead), but is the Terrain Summit ever coming back up again? It was never terribly active, but this was really well centered on my interest area. Maybe if the name was a little less intimidating, less, “Meeting of Elite Terrain Designers,” and more, “A Few Elite Terrain Designers Helping Out Terrain Design Wannabes(like me),” it might have been more active. Still, between the trashing of ME-Dem and the loss of this… I’m terribly sad…

Trashing of ME-DEM???

ahem…excuse me, I have been modelling a lot lately. ME-DEM has recently been talking to a guy who works for NASA. He is very interested in hosting our terrain on their World Wind servers and thinks it would be good publicity for them and us.

Activity on the website has been very slow admittedly but focus and discussion has simply moved elsewhere: MySpace, FaceBook and mainly private emails.
We’re redesigning the site at the moment for a relaunch. Oshyan Greene (the webmaster) will be involved with the roll out and redesign of this.

The Terrain Summit. Yep agreed on that. Oshyan did recently mention that he’d like to see this return. The ball is in his court.

I apologize. I thought ME-DEM got hit by a hacker a while back and you were still recovering. Didn’t mean to criticize. Well except for malicious hackers everywhere. :?
