Create Water cause render failure

Using WM4048 , Create Water device causing my renders to fail when the resolution is 8K or higher. I have tested several different files, on two different computers (one Intel and one AMD based).

The render fails, both straight and tiled renders are affected. Removing the Create Water device from the files and the render succeeds. It is consistent on both computers and I’ve played around with Storage and Compute settings but the issues persists.

Both my computers have 128GB or RAM.

Any one else have having Create Water issues?

Hi Anna,

I’m definitely curious to know more about this. Can you consistently cause a failure at 8k? Does the device itself report failure (red status) or is something else happening?

I’ve done some more testing, and it is not a consistent problem. Tried by adding a Create Water Device to the default example file and render that at various resolutions, and with it I could go to 16K no problem but at 32K it broke down. Here is the 32K Build Log:

**** Build Log *****

Prohibiting system sleep

*** Build Starting ***

Error:

Fatal memory allocation error: out of memory

*** Build Ended ***

System allowed to sleep again

The build has failed; a device could not be built. Perhaps you ran out of memory?

So the issue seems to be situational, the more complex file the lower resolution it can support, which makes sense. I know I’m notorious for wanting the impossible…lol.

I can run a file fine at 16K using WM3, but when I imported into WM4 and update the project and its devices, it fails at the same resolution. Seems like WM4 is more memory hungry, which also makes sense.

Thank you so much for looking into this, and hopefully I can migrate to WM4 in the not too distant future. There are lots of cool things in it, but for now I’m using WM4 only for textures and correction work.

Thank you again for WM

Sounds like it is probably a memory issue, but I will look into if something else is going on too. Build 4049 is going to be available soon as a maintenance release, and if I can find the issue I will fix it for that.

Edit: Further update: I’ve found an issue where very large >16k worlds would fail with Create Water, and will have it fixed for the next maintenance release.
