Dragontail Peak feature requests

So - Dragontail expands WM in a number of new directions. I figured it would useful to start a thread talking about what kinds of things you want to see in the next Dragontail versions. In particular, I’m weighing where development effort goes. Mac/Linux support will already appear in the next version regardless.

Specifically within the realm of Dragontail-focused features, here’s the areas of improvement I am planning, and would love feedback on prioritization:

Improving HF+Cliff Mesh output

To my mind, this is a really important workflow, as heightfields are still the dominant format used for terrain, and basically everyone can use a mesh, so this brings most benefits to the most people.

The current device works but the connectivity between the heightfield and the mesh is rough, and further work should be done on it.

Other improvements could be:

  • Produce optimized meshes
  • Export as a collection of individual cliff faces rather than a singular cliff mesh.

Mesh Import and Conversion

I have prototype devices that allow you to import meshes and treat them as heightfields or VDMs for processing. Particularly for people who are switching to mesh-based terrain workflows, this seems very valuable.

More VDM support

Finish extending VDM support to devices such as Create Water, and continuing to improve the model quality for the VDM simulation devices.

UI Cleanup

I’m doing a pass to make the UI read more modern - new icons, some different widgets, etc.

What are your thoughts?

We would love more river features like deltas :folded_hands:

I was actually just writing a dev blog post about water – there’s a lot of really interesting things you can do with water and VDMs in particular. Since the endpoint of WM water has always been a mesh, promoting water to VDMs is fine even if you’re targeting purely heightfields. What you get in return is much better control over the edges of the rivers and where the geometry sits vs the heightfield or VDM surface.

Another pass through all the water-related devices is probably its own complete named release, but it is definitely something I really want to do.
