How can I get the layout generator to work?

I’m having problems withthe layout generator.
I can create one and open one up and add shapes - and see how it alters the terrain form the layout generator view - but it doesn’t actually do anything in the device view.
When I return to the device view the generator doesn’t show any change and linking it into the flow chart doesn’t affect anything.
What am I doing wrong?
(I’m running v2 in vista 64 bit)

Make sure you add the shape inside the render extends (zoom out, it’s usually a bit to the north)
