Ok, there seem to be some bug:
When I open the preferences->Path and just click “OK” (without changing anything!) I get an error pop-up
Create the folder in a directory where you have user access. What os do you use?

it´s Win7Pro 64bit.
I try to… So I created a new folder on the hdd (I got read/write permission, but no admin-rights atm) - still the same error-pops up

I can not replicate your error. What version are you using? I am using 3.0 DEV 2
That error means that at least one of the specified paths is invalid – WM can’t read or write to it. It would probably be helpful if WM specified which path was in error
Go through each path and make sure that, if you click the Open button next to the path, an explorer window opens up showing the location. If the explorer window doesn’t appear, or explorer complains at folder permissions, WM won’t be able to open it either.
Ok, there were 2 folders, where the drive-letter was wrong 
So, now it works perfect!
