Terrain Resolution Problems

Okay so I began by creating my terrain in World Machine, I then exported it to UDK as a 505 x 505 to adhere to recommended landscape sizes (https://udn.epicgames.com/Three/LandscapeCreating.html) as this worked best for the game scene I was creating.

Then I found myself editing the terrain quite a lot in UDK to the point where it was very different to the original, and I now want to put this new terrain from UDK back in to World Machine to re-texture. I’ve figured out how to do this but of course the resolution is 505 x 505 now (http://prntscr.com/6evngq) and all I’m getting is poor resolution, pixelated renders. http://prntscr.com/6evn9r

How can I get World Machine to put more detail in to it? Is it possible to export it in to Mudbox and bake out a higher resolution map?

You can use both world machine and mudbox to increase details, but in both cases, you have to increase your terrain resolution first. At least 2k (2017x2017) is recommended.

I was able to get it exported as a higher resolution from Mudbox but World Machine isn’t really making the terrain look any better.
I imagine I could add erosion but I don’t want to change the existing geometry too much. I just want some nice looking textures.

Here’s the new one, using a displacement map http://prntscr.com/6f2b2e and settings http://prntscr.com/6f2e1x
And here’s the old one, which was generated 100% by World Machine http://prntscr.com/6f2cru

Clearly I want the kind of quality in the latter but from starting with a displacement map I exported from Mudbox. I’m having a lot of trouble getting this to work.
One solution is I bake out high res textures from the old map and manually paint them over the new terrain in Mudbox? I’d rather not have to though.
