WM crashing on start up

can anyone tell me how to stop WM from crashing on start up?
I have a 3.2 ghz p4 w/ 1 gig of ram running XP pro.

I’m afraid we will need more information than that. WM doesn’t crash for me on startup, nor anyone I know. Is it a fresh install of WM? Have you changed anything since the install, either with WM or your computer? Did it ever work? Does it crash immediately, with no chance to do anything? What message does it give you when crashing?

  • Oshyan

yeah, it’s a fresh install.
It’s never worked on this pc. I used it on my old win 98 pc and it always
ran fine. When I double clik the wm icon on my desktop, a window
pops up saying “World Machine main executable” in the top bar,
under that it says " World Machine main executable has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

If I clik to see what data the error report contains, I see this :

Exception Information

Record: 0x0000000000000000 address: 0x0000000000000000

system information

Following this is some information concerning the cpu.
Then Module 1
world.exe
Image base: 0x00400000 Image size : 0x00000000

whoa… it just goes on and on like that.
it’s a mile long. I would copy and paste it in but I can’t.
There doesn’t seem to be any indication in there as to what the
problem is.

When I select the “run in 256 colors” option, it
does load but everything looks bad. THe work area is all black
and I have odd looking colors on my task bar and stuff like that.

I found this txt file, I followed the path in the error report.
I don’t know if there’s anything in here that will help.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>

Wow, this is a tough one, hehe. The error text didn’t really seem to mean much to me. It didn’t seem to indicate when the problem occured or in what module/access/mode/etc. At least not in any way I understood.

Anyway, the first things that come to mind are memory and graphics card. To eliminate the first as a possibility, download Memtest86 (do a google search on that, you’ll find it quickly), make a bootable CD out of it, then boot up with it and run it overnight. If it finds errors, then it is likely a memory problem.

If not, then try updating your graphics card driver, make sure it is not overclocked, and if neither of those two help, then try turning down the Acceleration in the advanced graphic settings. 1 notch at a time followed by a test, and repeat until you reach the bottom (left-side) notch. If none of that helps, try rebooting with acceleration turned off (all the way to the left), and try again. If that doesn’t help, return graphics acceleration to previous state.

You could also try running it in compatibility mode. Right-click the .exe and go to properties, then the Compatibility tab (I think - not running XP myself, but it’s somewhere in there), and set it to Win98 or something.

You might also try to find your Dr Watson logfile. Dr Watson is a debugger that has come with Windows since at least Windows 2000, and should be in XP. It usually runs automatically when something crashes, and creates a logfile entry that is usually appended to a main log text file for Dr Watson. It gets quite large at times, depending on the number of crashes, since the errors are appended to the existing file rather than replacing the old file or creating a new one. I forget what the exact name of the log is, but probably something with “watson” in it, and possibly a .log.

Hopefully we can solve this! I’m surprised WM has problems and nothing else does, though.

java,

thank you very much for trying to help me w/ this.
after reading your suggestions on how to trouble shoot this problem,
I decided to go straight for dr watson. I’ve never heard of this
before but thought it was the best possible source for an answer.
I’m not a pc expert by any stretch of the imagination, I just know
that I’ve never had any problems runing any other software on
this pc. This pc is basically my media/ gaming pc.
I like to play mostly 1st person shooters, and I like to make game mods.
This requires stuff like photoshop and 3d max and world machine would
fit in very nicely if I could get it happening.
After a little bit of research, I managed to locate the drwatson log file.
I deleted it and ran wm in order to provide a log that was a little easier
to read. The original one had a lot of crashes that are related to the
mission editor for a game called ghost recon. It’s pretty common
for it to crash. It’s due to errors in the mission files that the modder
creates. If you don’t do things just right, the mission editor will crash.
It’s no big deal.
Ok, with all that said, here’s a copy of the drwatson log.
This seems to point out exactly what the problem is , however, I have
no idea what it means. I’m hoping you or someone else will.
Thank you again for taking the time.

Hi there,

One thing I noticed, if I’m reading your drwatson log correctly, is that you’re having the crash inside the OpenGL module for your computer. From the log, I would guess you’re using an ATI video card, right? I haven’t heard of anyone else having problems, but try updating to the latest video drivers, and setting all video settings back to defaults if they aren’t already.

That’s a strange problem you’re running into, let me know if the above still doesn’t help…

hi Remnant,

thanks for jumping in and trying to help me.
Yes, my video card is an ATI card. It’s the 9800 all in wonder
which is fairly new. It was just released late last summer.
I’ve updated the drivers at least twice since then.
The last time I updated the drivers was late nov '03.
It was late last night when I read your post and decided
to get some sleep 1st before doing anything.
While laying in bed I was thinking… these drivers I have
installed right now are pretty up to date. I had dl’d a
more recent update that just came out last month but I hadn’t
yet installed it. I pretty much thought to myself, why should
updating the drivers make a difference… and I realized that
you probably aren’t aware of all this… that my drivers are fairly
up to date. I realize you’re just trying to help and you’re trying
some of the things that seem most obvious to you.
Anyway, even though I had my doubts, I just went ahead and installed
the new drivers. I decided I would try world machine 1st before
trying to get back to any default settings.
To my amazement, world machine loaded just fine. I’m not sure
what that driver update did though to make the difference.

Ok, so now I guess I’ll have to make good on my vow.
What vow you say?
Well, I made this secret vow to myself, that if you guys were able
to help me get world machine working on this pc, that I would register
my copy of it. See you in the check out line.
Thanks again for all the help.
Hey, while I have your attention, a few more tutorials would be
greatly appreciated. There’s not very many out there.

Great to hear that that helped, and also about the registration!

I really want to get a few more tutorials out there, I’m painfully aware of the lack of WM documentation; but my day job is sucking almost all my free time right now. As soon as I next get a solid block of free time I’m going to turn my attention to getting v1.0 out the door with solid documentation.

Regards
