How Do I Use the Customized Fractal Profile?

I’m quite confused on its use inside the advanced perlin node. Can anyone elaborate on its effect moreso than the documentation? Please provide examples too. Thanks!

Fractal noise is layers of a basic noise function combined with each other in some way.

The custom fractal profile lets you specify the type of noise function for each layer, instead of using the same function for all of them as is normal. This can be useful when you want the rough shapes to be of a certain character, while having the middle or high frequency components be different.

Here’s an example:

Check the box to turn it in:

(Picture below)

The first column is the layer the noise is active in, then the style of the noise, then finally how strongly it should be added into the mix.

The ‘*’ indicates that there are currently no custom layers; * is thus a shorthand for “all”.

Click “+Octave”, and a new custom layer 1 will be added. This means that the first noise function will be what you specify for that, while all remaining layers will use the * entry.

Click on layer 1 and set it to Ridged in the entry below the list; keep layer * at Basic. Take a look at the noise that results – you’ll see it has a basic perlin noise character, but with an underlying sharp ridge from the first layer.
