What I mean is, a top-down map that represents the vertical surfaces as white and horizontal surfaces as black, with every angle in between a corresponding shade of grey. Basically like the heightmap that is currently being output, but the values represent slpoe instead of height.
Is it possible to do this with World Machine, and would it require a complicated network of splitters, slope selectors and combiners, or is there a more direct way to do it?
Hi there,
it’s possible, and actually very easy to do:
- Create a “Slope Selector” device and wire your terrain into it
- In the dialog for the slope selector, put the two sliders at the top, put the falloff control to the maximum (right) side, and then adjust one of the two sliders if necessary until the areas of greatest slope reach full brightness.
It may be hard to see this since WM by default will shade the surface, which doesn’t make sense when applied to a slope map. If you change the display settings to “Height” and the colormap to “Greyscale” it will look like what you’re looking for.
Incidently, 1.1 will make working with masks much more intuitive since it contains a “mask mode” for selectors and other devices that displays the output as a mask instead of assuming it’s a heightfield like current.
Thanks kindly for the quick reply. That worked perfectly. And thanks for a well thought out and fun to use product.
