Random Height Variations

Hey guys, I’m new to these forums and I’m not really sure where to place this topic, but I was wondering how to accomplish the goal of getting a random height variation on my landscape. What I am shooting for is:

I have a landscape layout that outlines my ground. The shape of my ground will also have the hills built in, but I would like random variations of my ground so that it’s not all flat with random hills.

Secondly, I have another landscape layout that has my mountains.
Another for my rivers and another to flatten the ground for my roads. I have everything exactly how I want it, however I cannot seem to get random variations in my ground.

I want the North (Winterlands) to have a higher elevation than say, the desert area. Any Ideas?

Zones I am looking to variate.

Swamps (Lowest Elevation Above sea Level)
Desert (Next Lowest Above Swamp Level)
Plains (Above Desert Level)
Plateau (Above Plains Level)
Winterlands ( Above all else)

and of course the moutains will follow the ground so it will elevate automatically.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Create another layout which will represent your height variations then combine the two layouts with the “combiner” tool and experiment with the various methods.

Thanks for the reply! I tried doing that as well, however I came into the issue where the variations were too noticeable. The low elevation and the high elevation leave a crease where the two meet. I tried using the smooth macro and all that does is blurs everything together including my erosion. Just wasn’t sure if there was an easier way of doing this.

It should not happen if your secondary layout is as big as the main one. In this secondary mask your height variations can change either dramatically or smoothly and this will be reflected in the final combined terrain. Can you post your attempt?
